Make A Difference Day: October 1999
The Clearinghouse, Aberdeen Service-Learning Center, Northeast Council of Governments and United Way of NE SD coordinated a donation drive collecting non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods, bottled water and various emergency items. 550 Winter Kits were created and distributed through local agencies to senior citizens and citizens in need in early November.  More than 2300 volunteers and contributors donated their time.

National Family Volunteer Day: November 1999
Families were encouraged to sit down together and organize their winter holiday decorations.  The items they no longer used, new or old, were then donated to families served by the Salvation Army.  More than 30 boxes of ornaments were collected by 20 families  to provide 48 individuals with  decorations for the holiday season.

 

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: January 2000
In collaboration with the Aberdeen AmeriCorps Volunteers, the Clearinghouse organized a "Day of Learning" to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.   Approximately 150 individuals from the Aberdeen Boys and Girls Club, YMCA Bridges and the community attended this educational program on the civil rights movement.  The "Day of Learning" consisted of speakers and breakout sessions involving 35 community volunteers.

National Volunteer Week: April 2000
The Clearinghouse teamed up with Northern State University Students of Social Sciences to conduct a Volunteer Information Fair in the Student Center mall area.  More than 40 local, national and international service organizations disseminated information about service opportunities to the community.
National Youth Service Day: April 2000
Elementary students had the opportunity to participate in 20 arts and crafts projects hosted by approximately 40 volunteers from 18 community-based organizations during the Youth Volunteer Fair.  Over the course of three hours, 67 youth volunteered their time and effort towards the completion of more than 700 projects that impacted 1000 individuals

Into The Streets: September 2000
Eleven Northern State University students volunteered at the Adjustment Training Center, Resource Center, and YMCA Bridges to learn more about these service programs.
Into The Streets: October 2000
More than 20 volunteers from Roncalli and Central High School had a taste of service when they drilled holes, pounded nails and dug holes to build a playground set for the New Beginnings Center.
Make A Difference Day: October 2000
To address the recent loss of trees in Aberdeen, 60 Lincoln Elementary School 6th graders participated in a multi-dimensional service-learning project with Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry.  Students designed posters, wrote PSAs, learned about tree disease and proper planting techniques and planted 22 trees.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: January 2001
During the day, approximately 70 students painted individual 8x10 canvas tiles to "Make their Mark"  for a mural to illustrate the unity of the Aberdeen youth in a proposed youth center.  In the evening, students and adults attended an informational meeting about launching a student-driven and adult-supported youth center.
