Seasons of Service Archives

-Spring Volunteer Weekend: April 27-28, 2007-

Senior Center Sock Hop: April 27, 2007
This was a great event that helped the elderly. Six volunteers did 12 hours of service for the senior center. Their duties included setting up, help during, and clean-up after the event.

NSU Day of Champions: April 28, 2007
Every year the NSU athletes participate in various service projects in Brown County. The annual event had eight groups of athletes going out doing various projects from building a garage, painting, and cleaning out horse stables. Seven volunteers from the Clearinghouse helped coordinate the delivery of meals and the taking of pictures throughout the day.

MS Walk: April 28, 2007
There were 3 volunteers that participated in the MS Walk. This totaled 6 hours of walking through Aberdeen and visiting with members within our community. Volunteers not only supported a good cause but also did some promotion for the Volunteer Service Clearinghouse.

Track Meet Concessions: April 28, 2007
There were 10 volunteers that worked the concession stand at a local track meet. They totaled over 50 hours of counting change and providing great customer service.

Residential Clean-Up: April 28, 2007
Two volunteers totaled four hours of directing traffic at the dump for residential clean-up.

-Make a Difference Day: October 23, 2004-
Worked with Volunteers of America-Dakotas on a regional independent living workshop for teenagers between 14 and 18 in long term foster care. Following a morning session of learning about and gather information on community resources, volunteers assisted in setting up, operating and taking a carnival where youth could win tickets to bid in prizes.

-Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: January 21, 2003-
Youth and adults were engaged in service opportunities and leadership reflection while studying the life and teachings of Dr. King, promoting the President's call to service; and promoting direct service to get necessary things done and to strengthen the Aberdeen community. The following activities were held: a civic engagement campaign; leadership trainings that addressed peer and community needs; a book study, a community discussion/forum highlighting Dr. King’s work; and engaged youth and adults in service through mentoring and community service projects. The project activities engaged more than 100 people as volunteers that contributed approximately 700 hours in service.
  -Make A Difference Day: October 26, 2002-
Approximately 48 community members, both youth and adult, volunteered at various community sites. From raking leaves for homebound senior citizens to food pantry stocking at The Salvation Army and delivering food for homebound senior citizens along with the clients of the Adjustment Training Center, volunteers exhausted more than 192 hours, impacting approximately 148 people.
 
-National Youth Service Day: April 27, 2002-
An estimated 35 elementary-age youth (19 pre-registered) attended the third annual Youth Volunteer and Asset Fair to volunteer for area community-based organizations and build developmental assets. The youth completed projects at 20 booths organized by community-based organizations and Northern State University’s Education Department. Overall, more than 100 volunteers were involved in this event including middle school and high school teens, college students and adults. More than 300 volunteer hours were effectively used for this event to complete a total of 396 projects that are estimated to impact 865 people.
-Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 19, 2002-
A benefit concert featuring regional and area youth bands attracted 260 youth and raised $3000 for the Aberdeen skatepark. In conjunction with National Mentoring Month, students were also recruited and trained to participate in the Aberdeen Area Mentoring Program. In addition, youth were recruited to participate in the 100 Hour Service Challenge.
-Make A Difference Day: October 27, 2001-
Approximately 375 community members, businesses, organizations, schools, youth and service groups volunteered at various community sites. From raking leaves for homebound senior citizens to beautification efforts of the environment and facilities, volunteers exhausted more than 1300 hours, impacting approximately 2850 people.
-National Volunteer Week/Earth Day/Arbor Day: May 16, 2001 (April 22-28)-
Ten youth and three adults from the Salvation Army Adventure Corps and Sunbeams planted approximately 65 trees under the guidance of two Central High School Link volunteers and six Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry employees
-National Youth Service Day: April 21, 2001-
Youth had the opportunity to participate in 20 arts and crafts projects at the second annual Youth Volunteer Fair. Approximately 20 elementary students learned creative ways of volunteering as they completed projects sponsored by 10 community agencies.
-Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 15, 2001-
Students and adults came together to establish the foundation for launching a student-driven and adult-supported youth center in Aberdeen. During the day, approximately 70 students painted individual 8x10 canvas tiles to "Make their Mark." The tiles will be used to create a mural to illustrate the unity of the Aberdeen youth in the proposed youth center. In the evening, students and adults attended informational meeting about the initiative and formed a steering committee.
-Make A Difference Day: November 2, 2000-
To address the recent loss of trees in Aberdeen, the Clearinghouse organized a tree planting project between 60 Lincoln Elementary School 6th graders and Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry. In this multi-dimensional service-learning project, students designed posters, developed a speaker’s bureau, made classroom presentations, wrote PSAs, learned about tree disease and proper planting techniques and planted 22 trees in the Lincoln area neighborhood.
-National Youth Service Day: April 15, 2000-
The Clearinghouse sponsored a Youth Volunteer Fair for elementary students to volunteer in a creative way. Youth had the opportunity to participate in 20 arts and crafts projects hosted by approximately 40 volunteers from 18 community-based organizations. Over the course of three hours, 67 youth volunteered their time and effort towards the completion of more than 700 projects that impacted 1000 individuals!
-National Volunteer Week: April 9-15, 2000-
The Clearinghouse teamed up with Northern State University Students of Social Sciences to conduct a Volunteer Information Fair in the Student Center mall area. More than 40 local, national and international service organizations disseminated information about service opportunities to the community.
-Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 17, 2000-
The Aberdeen AmeriCorps Volunteers and the Clearinghouse hosted a “Day of Learning” in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Approximately 150 individuals from the Aberdeen Boys and Girls Club, YMCA Bridges and the community attended this educational program on the civil rights movement. The “Day of Learning” consisted of speakers and breakout sessions involving 35 community volunteers.
-National Family Volunteer Day: November 20, 1999-
The Clearinghouse organized a decoration drive to encourage families to sit down together and organize their winter holiday decorations. The items they no longer used, new or old, were then donated to families served by the Salvation Army. More than 30 boxes of ornaments were collected by 20 families to provide 48 individuals with decorations for the holiday season.
-Make A Difference Day: October 23, 1999-
Aberdeen joined in the nation’s largest day of helping others by creating Winter Kits to help prepare senior citizens and people in need for the upcoming winter. The Clearinghouse, Aberdeen Service-Learning Center, Northeast Council of Governments and United Way of NE SD coordinated a donation drive collecting non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods, bottled water and various emergency items. 550 Winter Kits were created and distributed through local agencies to senior citizens and citizens in need in early November. More than 2300 volunteers and contributors donated their time to make a difference in someone else’s life.
