What is the role of social norms in an individualistic society?
Social norms such as clothing, interests, beliefs, labels/cliques. Mainly I’m talking about the United States here. We have social norms such as in clothing, wearing something out of the norm will make you look ‘gay’ or ‘weird,’ then with interests as people are expected to be into sports and other ‘American’ tastes, yet, we are and individualistic society.
I guess I’m comparing that to the variety of street fashion found in Japanese youth. Much of it would be unacceptable by American standards even though America is supposed to be an “individualistic” society.
