What basis of thoughts and what kind of philosophy does one need to be a true contributor to society?

What if one doesn’t feel like they belong in the bigger society and that it’s run by others who only want their votes but really don’t care about the ethnic constituents? I am trying to understand what are the prerequisites feelings, motivations, and proper mindset to wholeheartedly contribute to society? I mean, does cynicism ever block this proper mentality?
We all contribute through our jobs everyday. But I’m talking about contributing to society beyond this even.
