Do writing systems play a role in how outsiders view a society, in terms of progress?
I am pretty sure that written language is viewed by many as an advantage and as a marker of intelligence and progress within a society, but can anyone think of any examples of this?
Why is writing held at such a prestige? Is it because of its evidence of a concrete existence of a society?
