Flappers wanted to be able to enjoy themselves and do things that used to be disapproved of. They drank, smoked, more makeup, and went out with men without chaperones. They took to sunbathing, which was something quite new. They drove automobiles, and the most dashing flew aeroplanes. They played sports, tennis, golf, and swimming were all very popular, and there were some famous women sports personalities, including the tennis player Helen Wills (’little miss Poker Face’) and Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel.
Jazz music was the favourite music of the 20s, and wild flapping dances like th eCharleston and the Black Bottom were popular. Black women singers like Bessie Smith and Mamie Smith were enormously popular in the 20s, and their records sold millions.
