What does the humane society do with cats?

When you bring in pets to the humane society, do they keep them all or put them to sleep or what? Is there someone else to call about stray cats?

every shelter is different with its own policies, be it a donation-run humane society, a govt-run animal control or any other animal shelter. unless they specify that they are a no-kill shelter, then many cats not adopted are euthanized. (thing is, even many no-kill shelters euthanize as well.) how much time they are given depends on the facility, how full they are & the demand for their cage space, the animals involved & how healthy they are (physically and mentally). most shelters keep cats anywhere from three days to several months. problem with cats is that a simple disease like an upper respiratory can mean certain death in a shelter…and these diseases are so easily transmitted, many cats don’t get much of a chance for adoption before having to be put to sleep.

i’d suggest calling your local shelters and asking about their policies…also ask if they have a network of foster homes that house cats until adoption. cats places in foster homes have a better than average chance of being adopted since they are exposed to less diseases. trying to find homes in the meantime on your own may be the best bet if you are worried these cats may be put down. shelters should be the last resort, because frankly, only about 1/3 of cats there get adopted out. if you are willing to interview people to ensure the cats aren’t just getting snagged for research facilities or dog fight bait, then try newspaper ads or putting notices up around town in places like vet clinics or pet store or college campuses…freecycle.org & craigslist.com are good places for exposure as well.
