Okay, let me get this straight; you are a civil engineering student and you are applying for a postion at an engineering firm where you will be the Welfare Director. You are needing a project which you could propose to your boss where you will be directing the project. Did I get that right?

Is this something that you need to come with on your own or to be a director of a project that is already in existence?

Why not try on Habitat for Humanity for size. Surely the town where you live needs to know where they could build new Habitat Homes where the lots of land are affordable and fall within the Habitat guidelines for affordable housing. Or if you are a construction/project engineer again Habitat surely has a need for these persons. When to schedule construction projects, when to purchase materials, working with different volunteers with varying degrees of skills. This would be something that a construction management engineer could do.

I am a little confused as to the job of a welfare director ~ is this like service work or building up morale for the club?

In our community, engineering students build public improvements in our city parks. Some have engineered riparian or wetland areas, while others design small foot bridges over narrow streams. I’ve also see engineering soil conservation projects to prevent erosion. The most popular activity seems to be building exhibits for the children’s Science Museum.

I think a good place to start is with your city’s Parks & Recreation department, your local science & natural history museum, or the Bureau of Land Management.

How about, oh, build a bridge, or build a tall building, or design a circuit board. Those are engineering projects, aren’t they?
