How important are Psychologists to society?

10
I mean to say can society still function well without the study of Psychology? What are the top reasons why we need it? Or what about other kinds of “soft science” in general? Isn’t it more important to know about Quantum Physics, Bioengineering, etc than why people interact the way they do?

Very important if there wasn’t any psychologists there would be a lot more crazy people than there is right now.

Understanding quantum physics is great, but it’s not going to help people with personality disorders or depression or a host of other problems. The reason psychology is still a “soft” science is because we still don’t understand much about how the brain works.

If everyone in society was completely mentally healthy, then yes, I could see your point. We wouldn’t need them as much, but we’d still need them. For example, ever thought about how much psychology applies to marketing? You have to know what kinds of things (stimuli) makes people want to do certain things. Like what kind of commercial will make people want to buy your product. It may seem obvious until you realize that certain types of music in your commercial could have a huge influence. Certain colors have a huge influence. The name of your product, the shape of the bottle, the lighting in the commercial, EVERYTHING has a huge influence on what people do. More than you realize.

But still, society COULD get along without them if everyone was mentally healthy. However, as it happens, LOTS of people need therapy. For depression, for OCD, for anorexia, for emotional trauma, for schizophrenia, for autism, I could go on and on for hours. For instance, if you happened to have a child who had been ***** as a 6-year-old, you’d suddenly realize the vast importance of psychologists.

If all the mentally unhealthy people in this world went without any kind of treatment their whole lives, you would NOT like the results, and you’d probably think very differently about how important psychologists are.

This is a silly question. You can’t compare those fields. Is Quantum Physics more important than music? Is Bioengineering more important that athletics? Is Mechanical Engineering more important than literature? You can’t compare. Psychology is part art and part science (no matter what the CBT people say). It’s important to the people who need it. It’s important if you’re suicidal, depressed, OCD, in grief, have an anger problem, have an addiction, have a social anxiety disorder etc. For a lot of people psychology greatly improves their daily lives.

Psychology is an important science, just like sociology and women’s studies. None of these disciplines is in any way infected with fake science or politically motivated, result-oriented “studies.”

We should get rid of silly macho subjects like math and physics and focus more on how to socially engineer society into a feminist utopia.

Psychology is useful, but only insofar as it is grounded in reality. Without a thorough knowledge of quantum physics, one’s reality is dictated by one’s limited senses and the deluded hypotheses one constructs about how things work, based on one’s limited senses. It’s like Plato’s analogy of a man who lives his life in a cave and interprets the world by the shadows he sees cast on the wall by a fire. Since most everyone, including psychologists, are rooted in what I call a Newtonian consciousness, which is based on an outdated and failed theory, then there is likely to be a misunderstanding of why one suffers. The core of psychology is to understand brain chemistry, human behavior, mental disorder, sources of mental anguish, etc. and to then prescribe courses of action to relieve suffering. However, if you don’t really understand how things work, then the prescribed course of action is likely to be flawed. Therefore, start by understanding quantum physics. Then move on to psychology. If we all understood more about quantum physics, for instance, we wouldn’t have the delusion that we are separate from each other, or that even the smallest of our actions don’t affect others. Someone of Newtonian consciousness would dismiss this as nonsense. But in our quantum universe, action at a distance is real. Where I end and you start is not where our skin meets. You don’t exist without me, nor I without you, or for that matter, the rest of the universe. Grok that, and you’re on your way to a saner mind and a more joyful life.
